CHÂTEAU LA ROUQUETTE
A unique six bedroom château in Monbazillac overlooking the Dordogne valley.
About the château
Château la Rouquette is a wonderful, majestic property high on the Dordogne valley amongst the Monbazillac vineyards. The house has 360 degree views over Bergerac and the famous Château de Monbazillac.
The original part of the château was built around 1750, it was added to in the 1850's and then again in the early 1900's. Château la Rouquette originally owned all the vineyards surrounding it which over the centuries and decades have been sold to other local wine makers. The Château now sits on its own 10acres of land and lovely woods, it has been sympathetically renovated over the past 24 months, retaining its original character but modernising its rustic features.
Through the summer season we offer exclusive rental of the house and grounds. You will enjoy the wonderful historic building, the grounds, terraces and beautiful infinity swimming pool with majestic views. The owners live in an adjacent discrete wing of the property, with separate access.
Accommodation
Château la Rouquette is a spacious, private house with six bedrooms and can accommodate up to twelve guests. The château has substantial living space for both communal and private activities.
All bedrooms are ensuite. Four bedrooms are in the tower section of the château, all with far reaching views over the valley or surrounding vineyards. Two more bedrooms are in the West wing and are on the ground floor providing good accessibility.
There is a possible seventh bedroom available in consultation with the owners.
Château grounds & pool
The château is surrounded on all sides by attractive gardens with 360 degree views of the vines and the Bergerac area.
There are plenty of terraces and lawned spaces for large or small groups to gather and the pool patios provide a perfect viewing spot to take in the landscape.
On the east side of the property is a grassed paddock with a natural spring from which the château woods can be accessed.
The wine story
Wine has been made at Château la Rouquette for centuries. La Rouquette is literally surrounded by vineyards in the heart of the French Monbazillac appellation, which makes world class sauterne-style wines. This is due to its unique micro-climate, that encourages the prized botrytis, sweetening the grapes. A local wine is made in our name.
The Maison du Tourisme et du Vin is within walking distance of the château, and offers free wine tasting every day throughout the summer. The wider region includes Pecharmant, Bergerac and Duras appelations, producing excellent red and white wines, all within 20min drive. St Emillion is only 50 minutes away, and just beyond that, Bordeaux.
Gastronomy
The Dordogne is a food lovers paradise. Renowned not only for its wines, it is sought after for its excellent duck, goose paté and truffles. Local daily markets sell local grown produce, not forgetting the highly prized Cep mushrooms collected from the forest.
There are many first class restaurants in the region, including three with Michelin stars. The closest, La Tour de Vents, is 3 minutes away. La Chartreuse du Bignac is 13 mins drive and Château des Vigiers is attached to 3 world class 9-hole golf courses
The nearest café/restaurant is Le Semillon, at the end of our lane, 350m away.
The Dordogne region
There is plenty of family and adult fun in our region. Besides restaurants, wine and cheese there is the rich history of Acquitane: fascinating sites such as the prehistoric cave paintings at Lascaux, Roman ruins and the Perigueux museum, nearby Castles and Bastide towns Sarlat, Beynac, Domme, Monpazier and the rest.
Also popular for some is canoeing and hot air ballooning. There is the fabulous Aqualud, a Spa and heated 25m indoor pool with kids water park just 5mins away.
Guest reviews
I recently had the pleasure of staying at the beautiful Château la Rouquette and cannot recommend it highly enough. The chateau itself is stunning, with a classic French design that has been impeccably maintained. The interior is filled with antique furnishings and artwork, adding to the overall feeling.
The host had made sure every aspect of my stay had been thought through, which gave us great peace of mind and comfort.
The grounds of the chateau are just as impressive as the interior, with beautifully landscaped gardens and a picturesque infinity pool. I enjoyed taking long walks around the property between the vines and soaking in the tranquil surroundings.
Overall, my stay at this chateau was a truly unforgettable experience. If you're looking for a grand and peaceful getaway in France, I can't recommend this property enough. Five stars!

About the owners
We are Jane and Peter, and we bought this beautiful property in the Dordogne in 2020. We had owned another property in the region for seven years and travelled there many times a year .We enjoy everything that the Dordogne afforded; the food, wine, rich cultural history and beautiful countryside.
Château La Rouquette had not been lived in for many years, so was a huge undertaking. We fell in love with it. We’ve replaced, repaired or renovated every part of this charming house and very much enjoy sharing its beautiful location, views and accommodation with our guests.
